Would you ever take a pay cut for better work-life balance? I’ve been seeing more people say they’d trade $20K+ in salary for a job with less stress and more flexibility. Part of me gets it—finance is brutal—but another part of me thinks, why should we have to choose between fair pay and a livable schedule? Would you ever take a pay cut for better work-life balance, or do you think that’s just giving companies permission to undervalue us?

No way. Taking a pay cut for “balance” just tells companies they can underpay us for the same work. Instead, we should be demanding both—high pay and boundaries. Finance is brutal, but we make sacrifices because we’re paid well. If I want balance, I’ll negotiate, not accept less.

I’m not really in the place in my life where I would feel like taking a pay cut would be beneficial for my long term career growth. If I hated my current job, I would start to browse the job market for similar paying jobs that may offer a bit more balance. I have made lateral moves (same pay) for more balance. Additionally, I have turned down or decided not to pursue higher paying roles that have long commutes or more time demanding.

Something like that sounds like a good idea on paper. But it would never really work out the way you envision. As long as you're working in finance there will be demands on your time. There may be positions that promise less stress, but I'd be skeptical of it really working out that way. Stress is just part of the life we chose.

It’s a tough call. I totally get why people would trade some salary for less stress and more flexibility as burnout is real (tell me about it!). But at the same time, it’s frustrating that we even have to make that choice. Fair pay and a livable schedule shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

I’m trying to buy my first house and my wife and I have a few IRAs from previous employers (Roth and non Roth). I read I won’t be penalized if I take out upto 10k from my IRAs for a first time house (except for taxes on the non-Roth accounts). Anyone know how true this is, how the process works, or have any advice? Is it a good idea

What are your thoughts on pay discrepancies based on family structure? Ex. Two people do the same job but one is paid more or given a larger bonus “because they have kids and you live alone” or “because their family is struggling”. Is that an ethical factor if both employees do the same job at the same pace, quality, etc?
