When that first happened to me I thought it was some kind of hazing move. Like why are we faking an entire search? Turns out they weren't kidding and this happens sometimes. I don't like it TBH, can't we just tell them we thought we had it but didnt?

Ugh same, I hated that. Like why fake a search? Just be real and say we don’t have it.
I’d tell them there was miscommunication, and take their name and number and tell them we will call them when we have the item they are wanting.

Lmao that’s honestly the smartest way to handle it. Saves you from the awkwardness and keeps them chill.
That adrenaline is real, then silence when you finally roll it out. How do you decompress after one of those unexpected scrambles? I feel this deep. Nothing like that instant panic sprint because someone overpromised.

For real! That rush hits hard, then it’s dead quiet and you’re just standing there like

Been there, done that.
Another favourite: hear the cashier on the phone, telling the customer "yeah, we have one in" I ask, did you go check the shelf for it? OF COURSE it's not there, and we spend the next 15 minutes desperately searching the store for the out-of-place item. Because, when the customer comes in (and they ALWAYS come in when you can't find it), guess who gets to have THAT conversation with the customer and explain it was missing or stolen?

Oh man, that’s the worst part of the job, having to break the news when things go missing. Always awkward and nobody’s happy.
