$30k raise
Why are you thinking
do it
I’d be semi-honest rather than playing hardball - something like “I’m quite happy here and wasn’t looking to leave - but this fell into my lap and it’s a really big increase from what I have now. I’d love to stay though - can you meet it halfway?” Or something like that. I have not done this personally though, so look to others for advice (might make sense to make a fresh post in the FB compensation group on the topic)
Depends on what your current base is. I would say it’s worth it if it’s going from say 50k to 80k or 80k to 100k+ (breaking 6 figures allows you to net an even bigger jump for the next opportunity). If you already have a high base (I.e. 100k) going to 130k won’t make a huge difference. Apparently they say your life doesn’t change much between 70-120k and for the most part I agree. It’s only after you break into say the 150-200k range do you see a major shift.
Also try using the offer to get a raise at current job
Pros and cons of pursuing that role? Advice? Anecdotes? First thoughts?
I’m probably leaning to staying here and getting the experience. Naively optimistic that these roles will come again. the money just stands out to me
Just remember to think about career trajectory, not just year 1 salary, and general quality of the people, etc. Can’t recommend one way or the other without 500 more data points, but make sure to think about those factors as well.
It’s from 60->90-120 depending on exp. I guess I’d get 90 and a 15% bonus. That being said, not sure if that helps my trajectory since my goal is to go get an mba. If I go industry, do 2 years, now I’ve technically been in industry most of my career. Not sure it helps boomeranging back
MBAs come at a big sunk cost. Only hold out for that if you're confident that you can go to M7. Otherwise at 60k, you're paid a lot less than even the industry folks I know. Granted city also makes a difference
BAH isn’t terribly difficult to get back to, especially with an MBA if that’s your concern. If you were at an MBB, I’d be more worried. Salary wise I would say at 60k, you’re a little behind your peers for someone 1.5 years out of school. In conclusion, I believe it would be worth it to make the move.
That’s an interesting alternative ^ tips for using the offer for a raise but not being ready to leave if they don’t move it up high enough?
Also don't discount industry firms and group them into all into the same bucket. You should know where you don't want to exit to based off the clients you've worked for. But there are still plenty of companies like Exxon, GE, F.A.N.G. that have a lot of smart people and very lucrative roles if you can correctly navigate a career there. The average person at those companies might not move that quickly, but I'm sure the top performers advance and grow just as much as they would if they were in consulting
Question, why are you set on getting an MBA? What do you look to gain from it?
Yeah those industry places look awesome, would love to go there.
Take the offer, you can still do MBA in 2 years and have a higher salary for the rest of your life
