We went through this recently. We bought a clock designed for toddlers. When the clock is red, it means stay in bed, when it turns yellow, you can get out of bed soon (I think it’s yellow for 15 min or so before the specified time you set). When it’s green you can get out of bed. I was skeptical, but it worked great for my kid. He still wakes up early, but knows to stay in bed (and usually falls back asleep). If it’s yellow, he tends to get up and play in his room… when it’s green he comes running into the bedroom.

This is genius!
We battled for a year. And then gave up. Realized that it will last a few more years only and I don’t mind the kiddo snuggling in with me and wife in middle of the night. Makes us all happy now.
Yup couple of more years and it gets better.
Jk...
And my wife has made it her commitment to getting him back to his bed. Been a really rough couple of weeks. Please tell me it gets better!
I have a 14 and a 12 year old and they don’t get into my bed at 4am so there’s hope 😅 On a more serious note 4am is a tough one because it’s already so close to morning that by the time you’ve fought and got the little one settled you’ve killed the last couple of hours of good sleep for yourself. I can defiantly see the pros and cons of each approach. Have you tried pushing back bedtime / black out curtains / sticker charts for staying in his own bed all night / an easy to read clock where he can’t come in to your room until the first number says 6? (I also have a 4 yr old who has good and bad periods of wanting to be in our bed).
Hope it gets better for you. Our 6 week old refuses to sleep at night and sleeps “like a baby” all day! My wife and I are hardly getting any sleep. Please tell me it gets better.
Put a lock on the outside of the door. Ours was doing this. After a week or so with the lock, she doesn’t even get out of bed. It’s not safe for a 2.5 yr old to be walking around the house at night unsupervised.
We tell our three year old he can come get us when the sun comes up. Works well enough
