Not arthritis but Crohn’s disease which when active gives me a lot of pain.
You have to figure out what drives the pain and then minimise. So for me food is very important: I will be a total diva about diet, take a tonne of food with me, whatever it takes to manage it. I also protect sleep and exercise time - eg not working past 11pm because I need to get up at 6 to go for a walk or swim to help ease the soreness in my body. I make senior leaders aware that this is what I need medically to function; that continually not respecting this may mean I have to take a leave of absence.
Also - just be open. I learned that if I tried to hide the pain and it’s impact on my productivity, I’d be perceived as being ‘off’ with no explanation. When people knew it was medical they gave me much more leeway.
So when it’s quiescent I can eat anything. When active I follow a gluten free dairy free diet very strictly and that helps.
When it’s really really bad I have to eat a ‘white diet’ which is basically plain pasta, chicken, oats...very low fibre. But that is pretty crohns specific, not very healthy on the whole and I wouldn’t advocate it more widely. If I’m on a white diet I’m probably also in hospital.
I have severe arthritis in my hands and iliac sacrum joints. Am currently going through a series of epidural beta block injections. Some relief but it's short term.
I find mild exercise helps. I walk 5 miles 4 times a week. When working I get up from my desk every hour and walk down the stairs, I'm on the 8th floor. Take elevator back up.
For my hands, I use a heating pad.. it's inconvenient but helps when the pain is st it's worst.
I don't take any pain medication, but that's just me.
I'm sorry and hope this helps a bit.
Thank you so much for this advice. I’ll look into getting heating pads
So I was diagnosed as well. Biggest things you can do
1) stay super hydrated 15 glasses a day
2) take meds religiously on time
3) see naturopath def better than all horrible meds or whole functional medicine
4) read the book plant paradox game changing for me, ii brought my markers down by 97% . I’m gluten free, dairy free, soy free.
Not easy but it helps.
5) meat in the us is shite. I’m thinking of going vegan. But plant paradox talks about better meat if you can’t do it
6) meditation calms you down and helps any diseases
7) take time off to deal with this. A disease is tough to go through. I went through my 5 stages of grief over 2 years cause I didn’t understand stuff and didn’t take time off. I was in depression for years.
Hope this helps.
I would go see a rheumatologist if you haven’t already. I’ve had rheumatoid arthritis since I was a kid. There are several treatment plans they can put you on that will help in managing your arthritis. I am on remicaide and I don’t experience any joint pain any more.
I had major back surgery before 30 a couple years ago and still deal with pain everyday. For the first 6 months, I was on medical orders not to travel and I found that for the first year, the amount of time I could spend on a plane was severely limited while my body recuped. Work with your doctor and HR to see if you can get some kind of accomodation that puts you on local or short travel distance projects while your body is adjusting.
It does get better, but you have to be gentle with yourself in the first year or so and figure out what works and doesn't. don't be afraid to make those requests or even take FMLA if needed. I do fly now for work but know my limits, ie no coast to coast projects for me, tyvm.
+1000 on the heatpad for the suitcase. Always use it at night in the hotel room and have been known to bring it to the office with me. Pain is pain, gotta manage it and who cares what anyone else says.
If you're not overly germophobe, I also looked for hotels with indoor pools/whirlpools that I'd make use of. Or hot baths in your room.
Thank you. This was really helpful. I’ve just been really afraid to tell my project lead about it. I now wake up 2 hours early because it’s just so painful to get up and it takes a while for my body to calm down
Take a sick leave lol.
Yeah I won’t take a sick leave. I literally just started my career 3 months ago
Lazarus CBD balm. Life changing
Check out the app Curable. It deals 100% with the science behind how our brain decides how much pain sensation to produce (I.e. we can’t experience pain until our brain receives messages from nerves, decides how much of a threat the message is, and then produces pain to get our attention.) There’s some free material on the app (and some paid). It helps you work with your brain to help it understand the issue its perceiving is not really a threat.
I dealt with chronic pain for a long time and was in a support group when I learned about this. I haven’t met anyone whose pain didn’t drop 50%. Mine went away altogether (but everyone comes from different places!)
Anti-inflammatory diet, exercise (foam rolling, stretching/yoga, some weights), sleep, hydration, arnica/anything that helps topically, herbals (e.g., turmeric) and/or pharmaceuticals
What are examples of anti inflammatory diet?
Girlfriend had a similar issue and was considering surgery. Ended on on a project in Denver and bought some THC salve. Sounds ridiculous, but it cured her almost immediately.
It's CBD creme and can help.
It’s worth looking into the carnivore diet
