How many hours each way? What is economy price?
Enjoy your first class trip then :)
Depends - what city are you flying from
Yea you are prob right, too much time on flyer talk has given me bad habits!
Not an expert travel hacker, but that feels like a reasonable price for round trip first class flight to Europe. If you can do it and would value it, I say go for it
That sounds pretty awesome to me. Four points in favor and two question marks.
+ Good price: if you use business = 4x economy as a rule of thumb, that's like a $625 economy ticket. The absolute cheapest is a little bit lower - call it $400-500 economy, $1600-2000 business - but in the big picture, that ticket price could increase by a lot more than $900.
+ Good airline for business class
+ Home airport
+ Nonstop on the way home
? If the European airport(s) are exactly where you want to go, that would be another plus. It isn't terrible to hop on a train or intra Europe flight to connect, but you're trying to treat yourself here. Less hassle is good.
? Days of the week: a $2200 fare on Wednesdays only might not be as good as a $2500 fare on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.
For fun, I ran a flexible date search on Google Flights: Columbus to Europe, one week, anytime in the next six months, 15 hours' duration or less. $2400 is where a lot of cheap cities started popping up, UK was in the $2200s, and Spain and Portugal were in the $1900s. That's the same conclusion for me: I wouldn't feel bad about $2500 (still a great deal in the bigger picture) but not the absolute cheapest.
Super thoughtful and helpful post! I did not know about the 4x rule so really good to know, and yea to your point on not being the cheapest, I think that is exactly why I’d be okay with the splurge (if it comes back) - a lot to be said about convenience/nonstop
For first class, I feel like that’s an excellent price. But, if you’re flying from the US East Coast, is that a long enough flight to warrant first class? Wouldn’t be for me, but different strokes for different folks.
Delta One is super nice if that is what you mean by first class? Not sure what the different planes have
