They really need to lower the class sizes to teach math starting in JR high. Smart kids need to be tracked, and can have higher class sizes, but the lower kids need a ton of support and manipulatives. Many of the lower kids don't know their facts--key to noticing patterns and relationships that they will need later on. I feel elementary teachers do too much fun stuff, and possibly may neglect the "boring stuff". I know they teach it, because my students when I was at Jr high (a few of them) knew the material. But the overwhelming majority of them didn't learn anything. Latest test scores in my district showed about 25% grade level math mastery.
