This meeting is not the time to discuss comp. This is a friendly meet and greet to see if he likes your personality and to ask about your skillsets and what your current role is like and what he is looking for the new role.

Literally just meet with the guy and ask a billion questions to pin down what the role is, how they compete, etc. Can end with ballpark comp expectations if you are interested.
Why not ask your former boss? Anyways I wouldn’t worry excessively as it’s normal you ask many questions too during the first ‘interview’ like others pointed out
+ I wouldn’t bring up compensation in the very first conversation unless they ask
Agreed. I think you need to know more to assess that. I wouldn't bring it up.
