Get the nicer place. Having a home I love being in and going back to is so important to me. You will save part of the delta back with cooking and staying in more because you have an awesome place and can “escape” at home versus other avenues.
I just moved away from the Bay Area, and considering how much time I spent at home in the COVID age, I’m glad I spent more on a nice apartment. Not sure which areas you are looking in, but your numbers feel a bit off. My roommate just found a nice 1-bedroom in our neighborhood for $2700/month (includes parking). There are deals to be had out there.
I moved overseas. Finally got a visa granted after significant COVID delays. I personally wasn’t a fan of the Bay Area — too expensive, not a fan of the fog, and I’m not outdoorsy. If I stayed in the USA, I would have moved somewhere else to have worked remotely with my Bay Area employer.
