100% agree with OP, that was a super fast switch! I have liked not having to pay for food at domestic airports.
That said, the benefit often covers the most mediocre and (thanks to Priority Pass) high-traffic restaurants at each airport. So I'm sort of okay with this, even if not ideal....
It almost seems like it was bound to happen sooner or later - between the travel credit and 10,000 annual miles, they’re paying you to use the card. Doesn’t seem profitably long term.

Yes
Agree. They didn’t even wait for their own lounge network to grow first before pulling that. :/ I travel for work and sometimes I go to small airports and priority pass restaurants is my go-to. Bummed they’re taking it away
