If your team, and in particular your seniors , have no mojo or drive. Then bail. I assume you're at the outset of your career?
I'm not sure how the UK is structured but in the US I would look to move to another account first.
AD level. We're all similar levels (part of the issue, too) plus a head of dept. I know the head of dept would love more drive in the team (and we get on great and work well together) but the others are very content and lazy in attitude and because the issue is deadweight, it's difficult to manage! Unless there's a drastic change, this stale environment will always be the same. I don't know whether I need to cut my losses and move on? I feel like i've exhausted all options and been open with the head of dept about my feelings and situation - what more can I do!
Sounds like you want to take head of dept's job.
@CD1 Really? What gives you that impression? I'm ambitious therefore a threat?! Because that's not at all where I was going with this, so curious to understand your rationale. I consider my options: hope things in the team change or find what I want elsewhere - which is a more enthusiastic and involved team. (Neither of which say that I want someone else's job). The head of dept is the only one I think pulls their weight in the team and we work great together on new projects. I just wish the others had the same motivation to pitch in and change things up and not just do the same thing year in, year out.
AD, rereading this. You seem to want to be your dept head's partner. But why hasn't your dept head gotten rid of all the deadweight you've pointed out to him/her?
Easy life?! Doesn't want to face up to the reality of what that'll mean! (I'm in the UK so different culture here around getting rid of people compared to US). And the flat and silo structure has meant that it's difficult for me to move above them especially because in number of years, they have been here longer.
From your experience, has pushing for such a big change been worth holding out for? I feel like I almost know the answer is to move on and stop being so loyal! But if anyone has had experience of waiting it out, i'd love to know if it's been worth it!
In my experience, when someone says "my team is full of deadweight, my boss is lovely but ineffective, I'm doing all I can to change the culture but no one is listening to me...," I think it is time for that person to go. But, I think you'll find this same problem wherever you go, and you'll be unhappy again. So, I'd learn from this at your next gig. Are all these people really deadweight? Why was I unable to get people to listen to me? Am I as effective as I think I am? What do I truly want to do? To me it sounds like you think you are ready for a leadership position but others don't see you that way. I'd use this experience as a chance to learn why that is. But yeah, you probably gotta go do it somewhere else.
Also, what's a flat/silo structure? Those 2 things are opposite one another.
Ok thanks - helpful advice, cheers!
Ah I meant we are all same level therefore difficult for much movement. But we're silo because we specialise in certain areas.
