After being a freelancer for five years, I'm potentially going to accept a FT job for the first time. I'm stressed about the salary negotiation part because I literally have no benchmark. What resources do you think are best for determining the right salary to ask for? I don't want to lowball myself, but also don't want to seem clueless. 😅

Do some research on rates in your area, the scope of the role, and the company size. My biggest concern would be the loss of independence. After getting used to managing my own time and projects, it would probably take me a while to adjust to the structure of a full-time job again. I’m curious how others have made the shift from freelance to full-time (or the other way) and what strategies helped you adjust to such a different work style.

LinkedIn might be helpful. Search the job title, filter by location, and check profiles of people doing similar work. Some people list salary ranges in their posts or comments, and even when they don’t, it helps you sanity-check the level you’re being hired at.

Just Google it

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Quite a few have mentioned using whiteboards as a way of staying focused on important projects. If this method works for you, how do you lay out the info on the whiteboard? Would love to hear your methodology (or see a picture if you don’t mind sharing)!

My wife and I are currently sharing one vehicle and considering purchasing a 2nd car, most likely Tesla Model Y. Tesla lowered rates from 2.99% to 2.49% 72 months. Is that considered a good rate? Has anyone else went with another auto loan? Also thinking about buying a 2nd home. Would financing a car before buying a house have any major impacts? I have a credit score at 794.

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I renegotiated my start date and it’s different from the date I signed on the offer letter. Do I need to request a revised offer letter or is the email thread with the recruiter sufficient. By the way, my background check is already in progress.

What are tips for salary negotiations? I'm fairly new to my registered representative role so I'm not sure if that'll impact my ability to negotiate? Any insights or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Should I Go Back and Reneg? Recently I was offered a role as a Project Implementation Manager (In Retirement Services) .The salary range for Colorado residents was 65-89K. I’m located in NY so the recruiter said he would try to get me more. Ultimately he came back at 90K which is a bit inline with that I was seeing on Glassdoor but approx looks like I may leave 10-12K on the table. I accepted already but may get an offer from another HR company in account management around 90-100K. Need advice

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
