First of all, if you've got an avalanche of hate mail it's best to just ignore it. Life's too short. But if some of them are signed and from actual people, not a bot swarm, consider what they're saying. If it seems like sincere feedback you can respond. But, responses in public may get dogpiled, so be aware that you just may prolong it all.
When a piece blows up like that, I scan for patterns. if multiple people raise the same point respectfully, I take it seriously. If it is personal attacks, name-calling, or all-caps rage, I mute and move on.
I usually look for specifics. If someone points to a detail I can verify or clarify, that’s worth my time. If it’s just name-calling, I skip it.
I feel like you can usually tell by the email address and the first line- if it sounds fake it’s probably fake hate mail
