I left a SV corporate boutique for v25 in March. 2.5 years, started there, loved it. Great experience. If you want to DM me there’s a chance I know your firm or came from it and would be happy to give you some tips and a lay of the land.
Would 100% do it over again this way too, the training and trial by fire elements 100% have helped me swim (as opposed to sink) in biglaw.
Much appreciated and agreed starting to see the truth in why you valued that experience. Definitely have been thrown in the deep end which has helped me developed tremendously.
Start slow. There’s a lot to learn and you should use the first few months to see how things are done. I think it’s better to be low profile at the beginning and then when you’re a bit more equipped, take on more responsibility. It also going to help if you understand the big picture of the transaction — understand the deal, the client, why they’re making the acquisition, etc. Accept work even though you’ve no clue how to do it, then ask questions. Use your judgement, but make sure senior associates/partners sign off on your stuff so that you don’t say/do something wrong (ex send your draft emails before you send). Good luck!
Really appreciate this. I took all your advice except for starting slow haha. Specifically really absorbing the deal and getting sign off on things. I started taking and signing PNCs in my first month and it accelerated everything, and have become fairly autonomous with direct client communication but consulting with seniors and partners as I go, but much more progressive to me made.
I'm just here to say Congrats!
Thank you everyone who provided insight on this. I have been absolutely thriving! Great work life balance too. They gave me a 35K raise after 8 months for exceeding all expectations. I have utilized my amazing support and mentorship, and as soon as I started was given and seized the opportunity to sign new clients and build my book. Book is growing and I’m starting to delegate. Already discussions of a partner track a little over a year in. Truly life changing and couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much everyone 🙏🏽
