Design conveys credibility and should be used to emphasize your message while making your reader do as little thinking as possible to understand your point. This is complicated and takes a fair amount of skill and practice. If it were easy, everyone would do it. If your idea of slide design is just picking some colors and pictures to make things “pretty” without regard to the value of your design, then you are doing it wrong. Just because YOU waste effort on making slides “look pretty” by failing to do anything useful with your design doesn’t mean that slidewriting and design is not an important part of our job that deserves to be taken seriously.
Agree with m1. Understanding the value of slides come with experience and getting burned by senior clients. And also having junior staff to spend hours on the slides instead of you 🙃
M1 is trying too hard to justify his/her existence.
I don't think we can take away from the value of a good presentation to communicate effectively.. but the obsession of making a slide look perfect wrt subjective design elements is useless most of the times. It is a means to an end but has mutated into an end in itself.
C3/OP, I can totally get behind your comments. You are calling out the same poor choices: focusing on glossy slides while forgetting to include the real info and insight is a poor design choice. Sometimes a slide just needs to be 3 bullets and nothing more—whatever makes it easy to tell the insight. Making the subjective pieces of a slide perfect can definitely take on a life of its own unnecessarily. If a box is a pixel off, oh well. I def agree that time is best used making sure elements on your page add to your message and aren’t just subjective or arbitrary
Think about the end game
My client: you spent how many billable hours to make it look like that?! Back to work! You clearly need to spend five more hours on slide 7 in particular 🙄😒
@M1 complete agree. Good design can change everything. It can also make or break just about anything.
I have a very different experience than some here. I work with c-suite execs on a daily basis and if anything, they are annoyed as hell with us as consultants when we focus so much on the stupid slides. They want real info and insights without all the time and wasted dollars spent on glossy slides. They see straight through that.
I dwell on this idea all the time
Are you saying your client is a witch? :)
