Obligatory financial info post. 1) size of firm, 2) billable requirements, 3) salary, 4) bonus, 5) quality of life, 6) debt, and and 7) family/married/single. Go!
If you're interviewing at a firm that markets itself to laterals as a biglaw refuge with low billable requirements and quality of life is it okay to say in an interview that those are one of the reasons you're considering the firm?
I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.
What firms allow fully remote, including for paralegals? I see lots of remote opportunities for attorneys, but then they require all paralegals in person?!? We bill too so it seems we are just as trackable with productivity. I've been remote since March 2020 (maintaining and even exceeding billable requirements), but my firm wouldn't let me stay remote since I'm moving to a state where we do not have a physical office.
Time to admit that I hate billable hours because some days I just want to do a bare minimum four hours of work without having to make it up later and not for any high minded ideological reasons.
I'm told I need to give more billable work to a new paralegal. This reduces my billable hours, which have recently started to slow down. I have no financial incentive to do so as I do not receive a portion of her billed work..Is it a common practice for an associate attorney to receive a portion of their paralegals billed work?
Can anyone relate to working from home and having children at home 24/7 due to mandatory virtual schooling? It seems as if my male colleagues do not understand why I can’t meet the billable hours each month. I haven’t had a paralegal or any admin assistance in 7 months. And one response I received today was “Can’t you just lock them out of your office.” No I can’t. And the firm is making 7k per month revenue off of me but wanting the double my billing.
Is litigation for everyone? Forget about the billable hours I know that’s going to be there but is it the way to “pay your dues” before getting an opportunity in, in house counsel positions? If this is true how long do you have to be in litigation? And how likely is it for you to get an in house position? What type of skills/experience are they looking for?
Any firms in the San Diego area where you don't have to track every minute of your day? I'm so sick of entering my time and billable hours. I've heard some firms are moving to value billing models.
I work for a boutique firm in a large west coast city. No clue what it costs or means if I’d make partner. How does the process usually work? I’m currently a senior associate. Been here a bit more than a year. Not sure if I want to stay and grind the billable hours or try to move to in-house or government law in the same industry.
My law firm gives me a report that breaks down the amount of billable hours collected compared to how much I’ve been paid on a monthly basis. Does anyone else’s firm do this? At what point do you think it’s acceptable to ask for a bonus/raise?
I negotiated a flexible working arrangement with my firm at the beginning of last fiscal year. It consists of a reduced salary based on a reduced number of total hours worked and a certain percentage of those hours being billable hours (my normal utilization % goal). My work-life balance did not improve and I gave notice to leave the firm last month, but my boss convinced me to stay through 10/15. Recently she insinuated that if I don’t meet the billable goal, I’ll need to pay back the firm...
Possibly a very stupid question but here it goes: just accepted a an exempt position. I’m supposed to be working 40 hours a week and 1650 billable hours a year. Obviously it’ll be more hours during busy season. My question is am I still required to work 40 during non busy season as long as I get my 1650 throughout the year? Is that different from firm to firm?
When work is created for you - staff. When you create work - Partner / MD / Principal or what whatever you call people who create billable hours for you 👍
What matters more - billable hours or quality of work? It seems like I have a good reputation for always being available, but personally, I don't think I am doing my best work as I'm overloaded. Does billing well matter more than quality work? Just started in the spring as midlevel.
Audit dept issued a year-round 50 hour minimum now. So basically if you have less than 50 billable hours assigned in a week, you're required to ask for more work. It's fucking summer. I'm done with this place
If you keep track of your non-billable time, how much detail do you put in your time entries?
I just found out my billable rate, can I use this in negotiations for a higher salary? It’s almost 5 times my hourly rate.
Junior associate here with very little work. I reached out to the assigning partner, but I haven’t heard back. I’m struggling to motivate myself to seek out more work by talking to other partners or coming up with ideas for articles and other non-billable work. Instead I find myself reading books, watching movies, and generally just kicking back and enjoying the free time. That said, I feel guilty that I’m not working a ton like I used to. I’m also worried that my lack of pro activity when it

Hey everyone! I’m new to this so bear with me. I’ve worked in Healthcare Consulting for 4 years as a Revenue Cycle Consultant.
