All else being equal, is it better to join a Band 1 group at a less “prestigious” firm or a Band 2/3 at a more prestigious firm (in terms of lateraling, exits, etc)?

We’re all either hybrid or fully remote, and that’s here to stay. 1500 billables and we’re serious about it. Work is primarily ECVC, Outside GC, M&A. I had added all comments during the day from everyone else, and the midlevel and senior were online as well, but it seemed very strange to ask me to stay up just to add three sentences to a purchase agreement. I've always been very technical, so I think that the only thing I am missing now is making sales. (I really wanna make partner)

Would it be a good idea to join a Social Club where potential clients spend time? (gym/tennis/paddel/events)

Any tips for how to better implement feedback on drafts? My work is so heavily redlined that I struggle to consistently follow through with every comment/feedback. I am in patent prosecution, so it is a lot of detailed technical writing, but is also fairly formulaic, which is nice. Thankfully the partner I work with is extremely patient and a very good teacher, I would just like to be better at learning from his very thorough feedback.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬

Do you remember when “office closed due to inclement weather” meant you had an easy day at home because remote wasn’t a thing yet? Now with a foot of snow coming, office closed means wfh with no backup childcare available….

Thinking about becoming dual-qualified as an English Solicitor. For US lawyers, how hard is this path relative to our own bar admissions? And would this qualification make me appealing to large firms?

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Looking for some encouragement. Has anyone here received an overall negative performance review or has been put on a development/performance plan and was able to turn things around for the better?

I’m a junior in big law and in the short time I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that counsels produce perfect drafts and yet aren’t partners but partners can’t write two sentences without numerous typos. Shouldn’t counsels be partners and partners counsels instead?

If you take vacation, is the onus on you to make up that billable time? If so, how do you enjoy long vacations?

Is it better to quit or get laid off? I know what to look for when being pushed out and with a combination of the work I don’t have and the work the firm seemingly doesn’t have, it just feels like a mess. I’ll note I have other job offers lined up because I felt uneasy here for a bit.
