I hate to say it out loud, but I think there is a serious lack of care in our society, too. I grew up trained to proofread my work numerous times before sending because not doing so could result in embarrassment or lack of understanding, as you mentioned. And even I have become more laidback about it, which isn't necessarily a good thing. The world just doesn't demand perfection like it used to.
I just can’t believe how many people don’t correctly proofread their emails. We all slip up from time to time sure but it’s consistent with some people.
At this point, there really is no excuse for it. Even if you're not a naturally gifted writer, there are so many tools available to make your communications sound professional. I don't think this is a weakness of mine, but I still use Chat GPT to proofread everything before sending out. It takes no time at all and occasionally saves me from embarrassing mistakes.
I mean even this is better than not checking at all, you’re doing the due diligence of making sure it’s legible!
People have just got so lazy and rush things out when there's no need, another 30 seconds to proof read changes everything! People do have different ways of communicating though, it's part of the job I find to adjust and react in all those different ways.
The average IQ in the USA has plummeted in recent decades. I don't know for sure but I suspect that schools districts nationwide have been instructing teachers to pass kids along to the next grade despite their failing grades. The sentiment has become, "Awww, it's okaaaaay..." rather than encouraging students to step up their effort. I have a few career successful friends who struggled in high school. Some were even held back a year but teachers pushed them hard to succeed and eventually they understood what successful effort was all about.
The USA's political swing back and forth between hard Left and hard Right doesn't help either. Both political parties court the votes of dummies who can't think for themselves. What the USA needs is a Moderate Party that can discern and promote the worthwhile values of both the left and the right and leave the views that are dangerous to the future of the USA behind.
