First, your’e not crazy and you would likely be successful if you have the capital, business development skills, and a decent portable book. Even if you don’t have all of that, ambition might be all you need. There is rarely a right time do anything so don’t let that stop you.
Is it possible to lateral to a firm that has the transactional experience you are looking for? If so, you can go get that experience and start a solo later.
Also, it’s an ambition of mine to start my own firm, but I’m still chasing my partnership dream.
Understood on the lateral issue. If you think the former boss is willing to do so, then couldn’t hurt to ask. If your plan on business development is well thought out then trust your gut. But, always have a back up plan if the first plan doesn’t work out as well as you thought.
I did it. But I went through a system of court appointed counsel to jump start my business. Courts have lists for court examiners, guardians ad litem, etc. It provides for income while you are building your business. Good luck!!
Focus on business development, meet people for coffee, lunches, go speak to groups of people who send business to attorneys like you. It will take 3-4 years (in my experience) to get the referral snowball to start rolling but once you do it’s magic.
Many people start their own firm because they just got fed up with their current job. I get it. However, I believe you should start a firm for other reasons. You should do it because you have a burning desire to have your own firm, and you won’t be content without making it happen. You’re going to encounter a lot of hurdles going solo, some that may seem minor compared to your current work conditions. Make sure you’re serious about this endeavor. If you’re serious, you have some money saved up, and you can generate clients, go for it!
open your own firm, you will make it happen! I have been working as a paralegal for 5 years and I saw how it works. you will be more successful
I ordered to open your own firm, you need to have clients that fill your day ... and bank account. If you are currently relying upon others to give you work, where are these clients going to come from? And why aren't you doing their work now at your current job?
Huh? OP ignore this.
