Would need a little more context, in what capacity did you lead the studies?
Well before my time, a doctor submitted a grant for a 5 yr observational research study for a rare disease and when I arrived on the team, my job became managing the study. I am responsible for managing the project (making sure we enroll participants, overseeing the operational aspect of the study, answering participants, teams, collaborators, other investigators, concerns questions, handling progress reports ect.) I come to the doctor when I have questions which are mainly clinical related questions that only a doctor can answer or when I have a request for changes to the study. I usually interact with the doctor once a month for these questions.
Generally, you would need more experience to be considered for CTM roles at CROs, pharma/biotech companies. You may be able to qualify for CTM/Research Coordinator roles at sites/academic centers with this experience, but transitioning to CTM at a CRO/sponsor company will involve some monitoring at a CRO or a CTA level role at a sponsor company.
Until I left academia, I didn't realize how much I did not know about the industry. To put this into perspective:
- a PM at a site oversees trials at their site, sometimes acting as a coordinating center overseeing a trial involving other sites.
- a CTM at a CRO oversees trial conduct at many centers within a region (ie. midwest, United States, North America, Global). As scope expands, this can include oversight of monitors, vendors, other functions as it relates to the project deliverables (DM, logistics, etc).
- a CTM at a sponsor oversees trial conduct on a regional or global scale, depending upon the size of the study. This includes CRO/vendor oversight, strategic planning, risk mitigation, cross-functional collaboration, similar to that of the CRO CTMs/PMs, but also involves sponsor responsibilities not delegated to CROs/vendors. Roles can expand to include other studies within the overall development program.
- There are some niche roles that fill project needs that aren't your standard CTM role, with a CTM title, but these are typically contract positions.
