I’m so glad NYC requires job postings to include salary ranges now. This money dance is ridiculous.

I really hope more cities and states start making this mandatory!
I always put “competitive”. Absolutely will not play your games
Eh. Most electronic applications I’ve seen won’t accept that as an entry and requires numerical characters. Back before technology that was more common.
My salary expectation is that they tell me the salary range. I hate when companies aren’t upfront about the job.
Depending on the vibe or rhetoric or even level of the position you’re interviewing for .. I would lead with something like “I’m not too concerned with the salary. I’m really interested in the opportunity. I’m sure what you guys offer will be more than fair”
If they continue I’d say something like “I’ve been interviewing for positions with compensation at x” or something like that.
I personally think getting the initial offer is super crucial and if you’re genuinely not happy with the offer then you can say it was lower than what your market research suggests
I hope this helps you or anyone in need buddy.
Very tactful. I like it.
Be honest. You won't eliminate your chances for knowing your worth. The conversation comes up anyway. If the employer is turned off by your salary expectations, do you really want to work there anyway?
They were talking about the application where you need to put a number, not during a conversation.
OP, you can always just put 1, since that field requires input to submit the application. That way you can have a real time conversation that you feel more comfortable with.
Good luck out there, it's a little/lot rough right now.
If you give a salary range that is (unknowingly to you) below their range, do most employers offer a salary that is within their range but above your expectations?
In my last job change, I ended up starting above the “expected salary” I submitted during the application phase. So… you never know.
The question is a joke and irresponsible of the company and recruiting process. Tell us the range, be transparent about it, and pay people within that range based on their experience and qualifications. Period!
I know recruiters that will screen you out if your answer is above the band for that level, and your resume will never make it to the hiring manager.
Experts say you should put down "0" or n/a in that field. If you put a # that's way higher than their budget you DO lower your chances of getting overlooked.
I meant to say selected instead of overlooked...

It's a very stressful question but is so important at the same time.
Yes. You are. I love to get that crap out of the way. Don’t want to waste my time with a “great opportunity” that doesn’t pay me for what I’m worth. They can keep their “opportunity” and give me a salary like I deserve and like they are already being paid
