Three of the biggest, oldest and most notable agencies folded into each other which we all know will result in unfortunate layoffs. This isn’t a Rethink thing…it’s an industry thing since the beginning of time…
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is how the industry works.
It’s really gross how lay offs are talked about here. It’s never “sorry to hear about lay offs at X Agency, I hear so & so is looking”, it’s always a gleeful “gotcha” especially when it’s agencies like rethink. Like you either work there or know someone there and your first reaction is to post on Fishbowl? The laugh reactions are especially gross. Seriously guys go touch grass. You’ve all lost the plot under the guise of anonymousness.

I don’t think LinkedIn, not under the guise of anonymity, has said it better than anything I’ve read here. I think it’s both okay to say that layoffs are a fact of the industry, the biggest change is the job market which sucks. Rethink isn’t immune to that and that’s why people are reacting. Don’t get upset because people who have been continuously let down by this industry finally have a space to talking about how toxic it is.
It’s the responsibility of the agency and business leads to properly forecast and reforecast when client budgets shift, exhausting every option before resorting to layoffs: redeploying resources, temp pay cuts for execs, reduction of non-essential expenses, prioritizing paying clients…
All of which are probably happening in varying degrees (?), but it’s still disappointing to see such a successful agency have no other option than rolling layoffs.
Every shop is seeing budgets get slashed but if the solution to every client windfall is consistently on the backs of core employees, I wonder how long before the industry moves away from the FTE model altogether.

It’s SO bad out there. Networks and Independents. Nobody is safe. In Toronto. Or anywhere.
I wonder...
It’s not. It was different people (who posted vs who was let go)
Define mass?
6 or 8 people isn’t a mass layoff
why is it everyone but creatives at rethink. Accounts, production admin. Never creative.
Back in April they let go of some creatives. But this was in Vancouver office.
Well said.
