This sounds dramatic, but the absolute best professional decision I made in 2023 was firing my worst client. It improved my work life and happiness so much and reduced my work anxiety so much, and I realized I had gotten to the point of hating my job just because I hated this client, not the job itself. Rip the Bandaid off and just do it. Your work life will be so much better after.
Learn to put yourself first. Sometimes that means not firing the client if it’s easier not to. Other times, it means firing them even if they’re about to give you a bucket of money.
If you are busy enough, you will be certain what you should do next.
I have had two clients I’ve attempted to fire and ended up not firing when they basically begged me not to. So I don’t have any advice, but once I want to fire and fail, I engage in serious, serious CYA in case I have to fire later / I already know there’s a defensiveness after the confrontation. Sorry I don’t have advice, but I can relate
What does CYA mean?
Include strict language about client’s responsibility in the retainer agreement & have a fee structure with a large retainer.
If that doesn’t work, then just fire the client.
