I freelanced there twice. There isn’t much diversity at all, although they try. They throw and/or participate in BHM events yearly. Carl Desir joined them recently and has been helping them make strides in that department. The global head of talent is a Filipino dude named Lionel who also tries to help the agency be more diverse. They also recently honored one of their black female employees for her service in making the environment there more friendly to our folk. There was a great ACD there who created an inclusivity focused game for employees to play that got the conversation going, but she left for Spotify. But overall, these agencies say they want to be more diverse but can only do so much to make that a reality. There’s a ton of cognitive dissonance and bias that has to be overcome before agencies become legitimately diverse because people are just more accustomed to seeing people that look like them at the top slots. So those who look different are more unfamiliar, and have a steeper hill to climb. That puts pressure on employees to not only do their jobs but also try to improve the culture. They’re trying but more work needs to be done
It depends on the office. Some offices are like tanning and drinking mojitos in Mexico, while others are a bit more like riding a boulder atop flowing lava.
As a black person working at R/GA New York I’ll tell you this is not that bad at all. We have the most diversity out of most agencies and a lot of people in the high up who are trying their best to make changes, and being somewhat successful.
They want to hire more diverse but the only way that’s going to happen is if ppl stop being so scared to come to us.
The more of us there are then the more of us there are. So come, it’s like 30 of us in ny now. They do programs with MAIP, Adfellows. Can’t say the same for other agencies.
@VP, show me any agency that’s not black owned that has more than 3 poc in executive leadership.
That’s the make up of the entire industry, so it’s important to at least recognize an agency that you can feel comfortable being black because you have people backing you to do so.
There also isn’t just jr level poc of color either, it’s a hand full of seniors, and execs in NY. Could it be better? Of course. Is it only R/GA that needs to fix that problem? Umm nah
