be glad you did audit, dude/dudette; you have a better chance at pivoting to something different. tax folks are crying and shaking their fists at the sky while deeply regretting their decision (me). i’ve been trying to get out of this field for over a year but nothing. i’m just gonna go back and get a computer science degree in fall and start from scratch; i really can’t take this field anymore either. wish you the best of luck! 🫡
Grad school is super expensive $$$ but I’ve considered it. I didn’t think escaping accounting would be this hard
Another barrier I came across was that I feel like people in other industries like finance and consulting look down on accountants & that accountants have a negative stereotype
They look down on accountants because those fields generally pay more as well as have more interesting work.
Try going for a FPA role. Those roles pay more than accounting roles.
Thank you for your reply! Yes I’m looking into FP&A. I want to pivot without taking a big pay cut
I’m currently in the same position. Except most of my background is in fuel accounting. After trying to pivot without a pay cut for a year with no success, I went back to school to get my MBA in Business Analytics. I’ve been applying to operations positions and logistics finance positions. Hoping to move into a different department within my company in the next month.
This is my first year. I should finish by December 2025. It’s been pretty doable for the most part. I had to figure out how the classes were structured and how much I could handle.
Before you totally throw in the towel, go to the big four. At least there you might have the opportunity to do a rotation (to like consulting, M&A etc) , be put on better clients etc.
If you’re not feeling that I always thought internal audit was a good gig 🤷♀️
You def have options though.
The WLB in internal audit is amazing, but the work itself is so dry.
"Good afternoon - Welcome to Walmart "
Not funny. There’s nothing wrong with people working at Walmart.
