Seems low but is family healthcare 100% covered? What about $45k contribution to 401k? What about car allowance? Any equity contributions to the partnership required? I know many first year partners that make $250k but it’s like they only make $150k because they have to fund max 401k profit sharing contribution and make payments on equity contribution to the firm. Maybe that’s what they were talking about when they said $150k? It’s like making $150k because of the things that have to get funded from your salary as a partner?
I know they have to pay their own 401k and healthcare costs. They get paid mileage just like any other associate or the firm reimburses for rentals.
OP
You state above 300+ partners. Without looking I'm guessing that firm revenues are in the 300-400 million range if you say you rank 15-20 size wise.
That's only 1 million or just a little more of revenue per partner. That is not enough revenue per partner to drive decent profits. Supervising 1 million of revenue is akin to working part time....and 150k is a starting part time comp level.
Something just seems off here. I am not aware of any top 20 firm that runs this low operationally pr comp wise. I would expect a top 20 firm to have starting comp in at least the mid 200s (or low 200s at the lowest). I know several firms where partners start in the upper 200s and higher. I could be wrong but this truly seems out of line.
Yeah I totally agree. The $150k is what they told managers in a meeting going over how partnership works. Unless they bring new partners in as income only, then later on become equity based on performance and such. The reason I’m asking is because I’m considering switching firms and am weighing pros/cons of going to a larger firm.
Woah. I made more than that in base as a first year manager....
Geography matters and what you do/ specialty matters, and stress levels. It is nearly impossible to compare.
OP, which H&R block do you work at?
The only benefit in staying is that your your own boss. Otherwise they could make more going private
Wipfli? 🤔
Mazars?
The key is starting salary lower end of range... possibly quality issues with the partner that makes $150k

Perhaps $150k is the base Guaranteed Payments and doesn’t have anything to do with Ordinary Income from the firm? I think you’re leaving out some critical info OP...
I would be shocked to find that a firm of that size does not pay at least 200. And that is still on lower side for a first year partner at a national.
Too many partners for the firm revenue. Seems like it is watered down role. How does the partner grow -annual draw and what is equity build up?
