I’m not Latino but I wondered about this and appreciate you raising the question.
Yes. Native Spanish speaker and dual citizen here.
Yes. Born and raised in Latin America. I refuse to be called that so I do not mark myself as Latinx in surveys. My whole group of friends outside work are Latinos and no one uses that term.
They just feel the need to westernize everything. Why do they even need to inject themselves into it when it shouldn't be any of their concern? Latinx is just for woke white people to feel creative and that “they’re making a difference.” Nothing but self satisfaction and a pat on the back for absolutely nothing.
Some of us, yep. Because it feels like our language is being mangled and our identity is being reduced to a single letter. Personally, I find it offensive when someone calls me Latinx because it implies that my heritage isn't important enough to be acknowledged by its proper name. It's a reminder that Anglo liberals often try to include us in their conversations without understanding our culture or language.
Yes! I can’t stand it and refuse to be called that.
People are dying and you all are bemoaning about being called a neutral term. Please get real problems.
Nah I'm perry sure people weren't dying until people started using the term Latinx, after which L1 decided that we shouldn't worry about any issues in the world when people have begun dying
What do you think about the new term Latine
Extremely frustrating! They've done some polling on this, and it's like only 23% of Latinos are even aware of the term, and only 3% actively use it. So when white people push the term it's really completely out of touch.
Yes, b/c no one I know that is Latino ever refers to us as Latinx and as far as I'm concerned Latino is gender inclusive if you actually know the language
Very
I thought I was being inclusive by using this term. This thread has shed so much light so thank you for that.
I’m not offended by the idea of inclusivity by using Latinx. That being said, that word is unnecessary as “Latino” is a word that has the neutral concept of referring to “all genders” when used in the correct context. What I find offensive is the need to create words for other languages when the language already encompasses that concept. As far as I’m aware La RAE doesn’t find that word necessary, and I don’t know any Latino that uses Latinx.
It doesn’t bother me but I also don’t go out to my way to use it. Lol
I'm curious. What would you like to be referred to as? I'm black and I recently was told that the term "hispanic" is not correct so I thought the term "latinx" was the better, gender-neutral term
*Also, Spanish is not a gender neutral language. When you refer to both men and women, you use the masculine noun.
No because I understand this term is meant to validate the existence of those not encompassed in Latino and Latina. I’m not affected by Latinx but it means others are acknowledged. Y’all will live. Maybe get pressed about the many other things that affect our community
That’s fine- they can call themselves that if they want. Corporate America should not force that term on Latinos as a whole though
I’ve heard people start to use “Latine” instead, which I think is more culturally and linguistically appropriate.
I go by Hispanic, but I honestly don't care what term people use. I care more about the legal community becoming anti-racist, much less diverse, inclusive, and equitable. There's a reason most of us don't survive big law and it has nothing to do with our abilities.
