I haven’t been bullied, but I’ve dealt with insubordination and passive aggressive comments. I documented everything and prepared some bullet points around what I wanted to achieve. It boiled down to the person not wanting to take accountability for their work. So then I had a touch base where I laid out their behavior with examples, asked to understand root causes, and asked how they could take accountability for their actions in the future. Even though I approached in a kind way, I was direct in what I wanted and didn’t take excuses. They came up with a plan in the moment of how we can move forward.
No one loves these kinds of conversations. Removing emotion is hard but helpful. I use the FYI book from Koran Ferry to help identify issues and provide speaking points when I can’t figure it out myself.
In recent years, I am noticing that the more junior people on our team are less likely to contribute, volunteer to take on more responsibility, and have little to no interest in actually doing any work related to their jobs. After a few talks with mgmt.. we decided to use Jira to trac & monitor tasks, assigned work directly if no one volunteered, and had stand up which did not allow for anything actual work discussion (no table talk) to change the narrative. This helped keep the focus professional but will not always address the personality issues.
