I have to get out 😭 - first year
Not a partner, but the contract partners at my large Houston firm made 140-150.
This is low. I’m a first year in a Southern City doing ID and I make $110k. Bonus is $6k.
I made 150 salary with no bonus last year as an ID partner. No longer in ID
180k. One year I got a 50k bonus but that’s not normal. Usually 2k bonus at the end of the year
Depends on what you mean by insurance defense. I do some work for carriers and some self insureds. Make over 200k, which should go up pretty significantly. If you have your own book, there can be a lot of upside even at a carrier rate structure. Most lawyers don’t stick it out for the long haul, and I understand why but there’s light at the end eventually. Always considered switching because I think I could make more on the plaintiff side but couldn’t ever find an acceptable base.
It is quite hard but I was able to do it by being in a good situation where I’m at, and folks I was close with (who also knew my work ethic and competence) became decision makers and send me the work. I think there’s definitely some luck involved there but the more people you connect with and market yourself the right way, the more realistic the possibility of having your own book is.
I have not been able to find any plaintiff side opportunities with a base higher than 130-150 and the firms in the higher end don’t give you any info on the bonus structure. They say it’s unlimited but then they end up screwing their associates ans junior partners. Almost all of my buddies on the plaintiff side have left their big plaintiffs firms and started their own firms. Of course it could be that I am not looking hard enough or long enough. Also may be a geographic thing - how the local heavy hitters here operate.
