I changed to freelancing from home (with my child home too) during Covid and it’s been surprisingly rewarding. I still get mom guilt if I have too many meetings, but there is less guilt from being physically away for so many hours a day. Better opportunities right now with freelance as well.
Recruiting… you know first hand what your hiring managers are looking for. It’s a good way to stay connected and networking if you decide to go back into the client facing side of things. Most if not all opportunities are remote :) AND, can be flex with hours once you establish a good rapport with mgmt
That’s an interesting idea! Thank you ☺️
I went from an agency where the average age was 25 and no one had kids to being at an agency that has a range of ages and there are other people who have children and they understand the need for flexibility. I’m much happier being where there are other parents. You should definitely get a feel for the presence of parents that would be on your team and how flexible the agency seems to be toward families if you can speak to people who work there. I think while far and few between, there are some agencies that are manageable for moms.
Thank you for sharing that perspective 🙏
I’m still figuring it out. I know I could go to a less demanding agency but my career would stagnate and I’m not ready for that yet. There might be a day when I decide to take a step back and then I’ll probably freelance to find the right thing. For now, I’m just blocking off my calendar when my kid goes to bed so that’s my sacred parenting time. And then we make the most of weekends.
Curious which agencies you/anyone here might define as less demanding… specific names of agencies or characteristics would be helpful. I’m deciding if I want to return to agency life after getting quite used to in-house WLB.
Had my 2nd kid and came back from maternity to an MD role. I too have Mum guilt but occasionally shifting my working hours to allow for time in the sun with the kids has helped. Having a supportive partner helps too - halves the load. My one suggestion - don’t feel like you need to make one big life decision now. Just try it out and see where it goes. You can always change your mind if it doesn’t go the way you expected it to.
