Funny, I had the same question yesterday on this board. I think smaller firms/solos do insurance defense, but I’m not sure how common that is or how they get the business.
Good friend of mine does work for one of the major auto insurance carriers. He was a solo for years, but just recently hired a junior associate to help with his workload. He made good friends with the supervising adjusters before going out on his own and he is well known in the legal community (outside a big city). Very personable and likable.
I should add that his rate is $175 an hour, and he also has some “flat fee” stuff as well, depending on when a case is referred to him by the carrier (aka how far along in litigation they are). He has a ton of work from the carrier and before the junior associate came along he had very little overhead. He does very well for himself. Also handles anything else he wants that comes along such as speeding tickets, some criminal, etc.
