You have to protect your mental health as your life depends on it. Suicide rates are nuts in this field. I mean, it's a place where people don't (or at least shouldn't) want to be.
It's nice to have a plan to use the CO position as a stepping stone. I constantly remind new recruits to learn as much as they can. There's always job stability and many other jobs to get into within corrections.
Congratulations on your new job! I would advise that you treat all inmates the same. It doesn't matter if they are serving life sentences or just some dope dealer. Always be consistent.
If you go in trying to be something you're not, it will show through and people won't listen to you. Also, listen to the other COs that have been there longer, they know better.
Oh wow! Congratulations! Do not try to please anybody and just focus on your own job.
I have to agree with the comment saying you have to protect your mental health. It is only one of the ways to survive and last long in this field. Anyways, congratulations on your new job.
