I’m an L&E associate entering my 5th year at a mid-sized regional law firm (approx. 400 attorneys). Barred in PA/NJ. Billed 2100 last year but my requirement is 1950. Should I try to lateral into BigLaw or should I try to go in house? Are either of those realistic options for me? I seem to be doing a significant amount of municipal law too, which is not what I expected or wanted at all. I want a life but would also hate to take a pay cut. Interested in L&E. Advice?

Have you considered one of the big 4 L&E boutiques?

FP has a good culture too and nice people. Busy, but all these firms are. You should definitely explore big law or in house as the 5th-7th year is prime time for transitions.

like

Same thought as SA 1, big law is not the way to go for having a life. I went from regional to big law and hated it and the jerk partner and senior I worked with didn’t help either

Nice try to cover the “bro” comment. You’re right that people hate lawyers for always trying to be right just like you’re doing. Supportive does not equal work life balance. You can stand firm behind supportive all you want but apples aren’t oranges.

OP - I hope you see the type of personality you can see in big law through this.

Identify what you like to do in L&E (litigation, compliance, labor, transaction, etc.). Establish what compensation and hours you want to work. Contemplate long-term goals (partner, in-house, plaintiff, etc.). Target firms that align with your goals in your region. Can be the 4 classic boutiques or AmLaw 50 if your grades, goals, and fit work. But year 5 is in demand. Municipal law is a blessing if you want to litigate; counterparts usually have less experience if they do exclusive private sector. Best of luck!

Can’t speak to every market. But there are a lot of job openings for mid levels in law firms. The same is true for in-house employment counsel. And there are a lot of openings and not enough people at that level to fill all of them. So now is a good time to consider the transition to a new job.

If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?
