I triple-dipped for 6 weeks last year. The money was great but workload was insane. Nights. Weekends. It wasn’t worth the stress in the end. Now, I’ll only double-dip.
This. I almost lost my mind.
I made $54k in December. Absolute insanity but pretty great.
Wow North American prices! In the UK you're looking at £500-600 a day, if you've got 13 years experience...but then again free healthcare, and we don't have to tip on everything and tax is built in... But Brexit and Covid has shot our economy down to struggling to get £400 day rate
Yeh I'd still take your NA Prices
That’s the game, son. If you don’t like it, don’t play.
I have a day-to-day and lots of side pitches. If there are conflicts, I send my partner in to cover the pitch meetings.
I.e., does a day rate mean you get 8 hours of my time, just not necessarily 9-5? It feels like a recipe for disaster but also a necessity to keep smaller, ongoing projects in my client mix. (I realize this is a good problem to have and I am eternally grateful for all the advice I’ve gotten in this bowl!)
I’m FT freelance with an agency 8hrs a day, with two other side projects. I just do my best to avoid meeting conflicts but sometimes it’s unavoidable. I personally prioritize the FT freelance project because I care about that job the most, and if there’s an overlap, I tell one-off projects that I have a conflict.
Thanks everyone! This game is pretty sweet. I really appreciate all the advice.
I’d love to know if you typically charge day rates, monthly fee or hourly
project rates with defined scopes/timelines.
You have to be brutally honest with the side gig in all stages, and ask them to give ample notice for meetings and presentations (I always ask for 3 business days.)
Most will understand that what they’re paying you isn’t a living wage, so giving them full transparency and mutual respect goes a long way.
