I hear this so loudly. But the best advice I have is to avoid any mention of your expenses. A pay raise is recognition of a job well done and has nothing to do with how you choose to spend your pay (speaking as the company here). Focus on your job performance, key accomplishments, client wins, etc. Are you in line for a promotion? If so and it’s been put off, use that.

Agreed. You don’t get a raise because you need more money, you get one because you deserve one based on your work and your value to the team. People screw this up all the time.

Yes, we talked about a promotion before maternity leave, and was put off while I was out. Time to make it happen. Thanks for the tip- will keep the personal motivation out of it.
