Job market sucks right now, networking is the only thing that seems to get people in.
This. I’ve had extraordinary success with this. Like, jobs I don’t want falling into my lap success from reaching out for advice (genuinely just wanted to chat / get insight). ZERO success with cold apps.
Market is exceptionally difficult at the moment. Internal candidates have massive preference but you are getting interviews, so at least you’re passing the initial screen. The market will turn, I know those words dont really help but keep applying and something will convert. You have the best finishing school on the planet on your resume!
Curious what your McKinsey role was?
Me! I’ve applied to over 200 jobs and am willing to take a large pay cut, yet, it’s been insanely difficult. Many companies I apply reach out asking if interested in lower level role, usually with a ~30-35% pay cut, that wouldn’t be that good right after the MBA (I have an M7 MBA), let alone after a few years at McKinsey. I feel like I’ve been fooled.
If the market is only willing to pay you 30-35% less then that is what you are worth. Doesn’t matter where you went to school or worked. The education and combo of skills is now worth less than it was 2 years ago. That’s how a market works, up and down. Respectfully, Sounds like you have opportunities, but your ego isn’t allowing you to accept your current market value.
I think it’s the market right now. I used to get 2-3+ messages a week on LinkedIn. I maybe get ~3 a month currently and the quality isn’t what it used to be, despite having more experience.
And what was it before?
Not former McKinsey, but a different consulting firm + Ivy undergrad + top 10 MBA. Got laid off unexpectedly and took me two years to find a job. I’m almost hitting the year mark in my new role.
During my previous job searches, I found that the HR system was set up to favor people that are currently employed, rather than people who are unemployed and immediately available. I still think that’s true, even though there are so many reasons now why people have gaps on their resume. It’s dumb, but built into the HR tools they use.
AI has made everything about a job search worse. The HR systems are now evaluating on if you used the right words, not the name brands of your resume. Until hiring managers spend the time training the AI to read a resume like they would themselves, the name brands don’t matter when applying cold.
What I would be leveraging is the McKinsey network. One of the people I chatted with during my latest job search is former McKinsey, and they have a WhatsApp group all about roles alumni are looking to fill on their teams. Joining something like that, or getting on those people’s radar, should really help.
Wow that’s insane. Were you a generalist there or did you align to certain sectors? Also do you have pre consulting expertise in anything that would give you an advantage over the herd? Ever considered something finance related like equity research?
