Anybody ever had a lateral offer rescinded because of a bad reference from your current firm? I’m anxious because my current firm wasn’t happy that I’m leaving 🥲

Reputation is everything in the legal industry. I doubt any partner could be that petty to put you in such a terrible position. Even if they do, the new firm won’t pull the offer as it says a lot about the partner who is the reference, and the firm to the new firm if he gives you a bad review. If anything it’ll confirm to your new firm why you leaving was the right choice. I wouldn’t stress it either way.

Are you talking about a specific person you listed as a reference or just your firm generally? When a potential firm contacts your current firm it’s generally just to confirm employment dates.

You’re incredibly unlikely to get a bad reference. Worst you ever do is say “I can confirm they worked here between X and Y” and otherwise not comment. There’s a whole lot of tortuous liability that can be made if they deviate

I had this happen with my current firm, but my offer wasn’t rescinded. The partner I worked for at my old firm was crazy, and let’s just say an ethics attorney had to get involved and tell him to stop harassing me. I got out in front of it with my new firm and told them the situation in the event the partner tried to contact them. My firm was super cool with it and said they appreciated the heads up. My situation was pretty extreme, but I think you could casually bring it up to your new firm that you expect your old firm will be upset that you’re leaving, and, while you’re happy to give them the reference they’ve requested from your old firm, you can also provide alternate references. Hope this helps!

Hi,
I recently got an offer from Amazon for sde new grad and I’m thinking if I should join or not as I have heard a lot about toxic work culture. I’m getting a base of 129k + 27k joining bonus and 94k in stocks. It is higher than my current salary but I’m getting a lower title. What should I do? Should I negotiate on salary ? Or on the role? I had applied to a new grad role so O think I can’t negotiate on the role?

I started working out and cleaned up my diet with the main goal being weight loss, but I'm really frustrated.

It's been a month, I feel like the effort I put in is huge and exhausting, but I haven't lost a pound, although I can see there's been a bit of muscle gain and I lost half an inch from my waist.

How do I find the motivation to keep going when I feel like the progress is so minimal?

I need some insight. Just had a phone interview for a management job in healthcare. I felt comfortable and felt like the interview went well. I ask questions and the ACNO said that I asked great questions. They said that they had other interviews to do as well but said the next step is to bring me in for an on-site interview (I live 1,000 miles away) and that the recruiter would be reaching out. Thoughts? I’m going to drive myself crazy analyzing everything.

When you tell your manager you are unhappy and they are excited that you are putting your notice and don't try and make any changes b/c the new person/persons they are lining up will just cleanup and make it better.

Then, they get here and you are left to train them on everything you do and your manager keeps saying "I owe you an apology" because they didn't realize how taxing and mind wrecking most processes you handled were... welcome to corporate

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

People who don’t submit their time daily, how do you remember what you did and for how long? I’ve always just submitted each timer as soon as I finish a task—“call with x re y” really doesn’t take that long even if I’m busy, and if I don’t do it immediately I’ll forget all those little I did in the morning by the time I go to bed. No shade at all to those with different systems, just genuinely curious because I see a lot about catching up at month end on here and I have no idea how that works??

This job is a lot better if you don't care about the bonus and hours requirement. I can pretty easily bill 1700 hours annually and my firm so far hasn't cared in the slightest. Worrying about hitting 2000 hours for the bonus used stress me out so much, and I just don't think it's worth it. Base salaries are ridiculous and way more than enough to finance my lifestyle.

I lateraled from a small firm to regional big law last year. I was told that my offer was commensurate with class year (5th year). The firm recently increased first year salary, with a 5% increase for all other attorneys. My original salary was equal to the new first year salary. The difference between my new salary and a first year is now $10k. I think it is fairly obvious that the hiring partner was not truthful with me. How would you address this? Is another lateral move my only option?
