Hi, kind of. Have been a few times though haven’t committed (have been too busy to join a committee and then took some time off to care for my mental health). I suggest going to the monthly hangouts first so you get to know people and learn more. There’s also tons of resources on the dsa site and do checkout your chapter’s social media. Mine is pretty active on Twitter and that’s where I get most updates but I know not all are. My chapter is pretty white, but then again most of DSA is. Always feel welcomed though and haven’t been made to feel small as a minority, which I greatly appreciate since that’s my biggest concern when joining predominantly white spaces. I hear every DSA chapter is slightly different, but I do highly recommend checking out!
Very involved in NYC DSA. Happy to share my experiences about any/all of it. There is so much variety so a little bit of something for everyone in terms of working groups and projects to be a part of. It’s the only org that has given me actionable tasks and I’ve learned a ton about activism and organizing over the past 3 years.
thanks so much for this thorough and informative answer!! it sounds like an incredible opportunity. fingers crossed that i make it to new york soon. this sounds promising
I am a member of my local chapter as well as a caucus that has a local section. I mostly organize within my caucus because I find it easiest to work with people who share roughly the same ideological framework and because my chapter is very large.
You definitely get out of it what you put into it. Depending on where you are, the campaigns you work on may be more or less aligned with your interests. The electoral group is really gearing up for Bernie but my caucus, for example, is focused on more on building dual power and plugging DSA into community groups and developing alternative institutions.
I love it! But it can be slow and frustrating!
thanks for answering! my old boss who i really like was a part of them and i wanted to ask him but i was also a bit nervous lol
