Had close friends in the same situation. Going to therapy helps !
Going to therapy helped me realize that I wasn’t just being a bad worker and that my bad working environment was negatively impacting me. Should be obvious but it was a game changer
Networking is the best way to get a new job.
Try to hang in there. Keep hunting and try to keep in a positive head space when job hunting.
I felt like this and got fired from my first job (for BS reasons. My boss was a racist redneck and I'm Arab).
I found a new job in less than 2 months I treated job hunting itself like a job. You'll find something.
You got this!
Not great economy so get a job b4 you quit
I cried on my way to work close to daily. It was awful. I even cried at work a couple times when my supervising partner's behavior was particularly atrocious. It took me a year but I did end up finding an opportunity that has slowly helped me restore my mental health.
I’ve been “quiet quitting” as I believe the term is called. Literally billing like less than an hour a day. Not asking for new work. And applying
I had the same thing happen to me. I moved to a new state, and took the job. I was hired for estate planning and then got told the first day I was there I’d be in litigation. Then I was told that the remote work policy did not apply to new hires and they were all RTO at the end of the month.
The clincher to me was that every day we’d start with an hour long meeting about how we were not bringing in enough revenue. We needed more money. If we can’t find new clients bill existing ones, even if you have to make work.
Then we’d have additional meetings that lasted hours about open matters and the managing partner would call out any employee who he felt wasn’t pulling their weight or doing what he felt needed to be done to bring in revenue. Anyone who disagreed was put in the hot seat.
In the 8 months I was there, 3 attorneys (1 attorney and 2 associates quit with no notice), 4 paralegals (myself included) quit without notice, and one receptionist left. Just didn’t come back from lunch.
I left this job with nothing lined up. I was out of work for 2 weeks. I had savings thankfully. What prompted me to leave was when I was driving into work and I thought about crashing into an overpass so I didn’t have to go in.
I feel exactly the same about my current job. The job itself is fine, but the environment is beyond toxic. I've been there just over 2 months and I have lost 15 pounds because of the stress. There is a reason this place cant keep anyone in the Legal Assistant/Paralegal positions. I've beat the average. They went through more than a dozen people in 1 year. I think I'm going to need therapy when I get out of here. I am actively searching for a new job too.
I’m in the exact same boat. We ride at dawn.
I have been on a similar boat lately…. I don’t necessarily work for bad people, I actually like my coworkers, however, management sucks. Everyone is drowning, procedures change left and right without warning, there is conflicting information (don’t do this because of x, y, and z, but also you don’t do it and then it’s like well why aren’t you doing that!)… It is a lot, and then the job market sucks. You send over 50 applications to get maybe 2 responses, and they’re just saying well you’re not qualified for this role because you don’t have the necessary experience. Well how am I supposed to get that experience if no one will give me a shot.
I was just talking to someone about this today, being a lawyer is not what it was cracked up to be. I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else, but this is not what I expected and it’s disappointing.
This^. I'm not an attorney, but this sounds like everyday for me. Procedures in our office change from minute to minute. I will perform some operation exactly the way I was instructed to and then Im told it should have been done completely differently. I'm miserable because there is always someone in my case that I did something wrong. I've been so stressed that I'm starting to have some serious medical issues. But finding something else has been so difficult.
You will get something. Hang in there. We all worked with terrible bosses in the past
Get out. Asap.
You could apply to other jobs that aren’t related to the legal field to give yourself a break. I found another job that was completed unrelated to the legal field. Then I gave my notice. My boss asked if I stay on as a per diem. I negotiated for a part time role. So, I’m currently working two different jobs part time, but I’m trying not to stress about either one.
Second this. Or compliance, risk management, anywhere in-house.
Poster here, thanks for the empathy everyone, it’s helpful to commiserate. Does anyone have thoughts on quitting without having something lined up?
Hi! @associate attorney 3 can you DM me? I tried to send you a message but am not able to. Thank you so much
I held on for as long as I could but finally quit. Currently looking and hoping better things are out there. Went in one night took all my stuff out and sent a resignation email. No regrets.
What made you decide to quit without anything lined up? How long have you been looking?
Quiet quitting is the way to go. I quit and 4 weeks later started elsewhere. Best move ever. I am so happy now. I should have quiet quit, but it was way too toxic.
You have my sympathy. I’m employed and not even looking, but I had an anxiety attack on the freeway en route to work a week ago today. Not because I hate where I work or anyone I work with but there are unnecessary levels of stress due to a lack of sufficient litigation support tools. There are many reasons stress enters the picture. As others have said, try to hang in there unless you have savings to get by. Because not having money to live on is pretty stressful too! Wishing you the best.
Not an attorney (of course), but do hang in there. I'm not sure what sector you work in, but I'm in corporate. I'm thankful to know of other peoole in law who assure me they don't hear the stories I share with them at their places of work.
The job market is rough for everyone, but attorneys are still highly in demand, especially in the coming ages of AI when their expertise will help corporations develop it. AI is surprisingly only going to increase the demand for lawyers.
There are better options. You got this and don't give up!
I'm in the same situation. So hard to juggle.
Yes look into mental health leave
I’ve been in this field for a couple of decades, I’ve seen it all, and personally been through hell and back. Going in-house saved me and I personally vow to never work in a law firm setting again (not that there aren’t good ones out there - there are). This work can be soul sucking, but you have to be an advocate for yourself and live by the truth that this isn’t forever. A little perseverance and willful positivity - you will find your way.
All I have are the Sunday night blues. The warmer it gets the worse the stress gets
