We’re the heroes but not acknowledged as such, but villains when we ask others to be accountable for their responsibilities. But I’m not bitter.
PMs are the unsung heroes of agencies.
Oh it’s totally random. I freelance and it seems like I might be expected to do any random thing vaguely related to making things get done. I am really ok with that though, along as the teams are good to work with and the company pays me a fair rate.
Agency size usually defines the PM role. If it’s not established I say go into it with your own definition and get whomever hired you to buy off on it 🙂
Do you think it’s willful ignorance or a hope the PM will just do the random tasks they need done?
Also I don’t think it’s willful ignorance. Just regular ignorance. :)
That’s why it’s sooo hard to get raises because the media team does not know specs nor do they want to know
Absolutely. Something I’ve found to be helpful to reinforce a PMs role is always have a clear definition of roles & responsibilities not just during meetings but also on the project as a whole. It helps to set expectations especially when trying to distinguish those more “administrative” type responsibilities and can set apart a PM from the account team, media personnel, or any other non-resource type role
Unfortunately, my experience has been less positive in my attempts to set expectations and establish boundaries. Even with a defined role, you still get those jerks who see PMs as the catchall for every task they don’t want to do. Pushing back then becomes being perceived as “difficult” and you either start acquiescing or looking for a new gig.
A 100 million %
@Rebecca it doesn't work. Nothing works until there is change in agency culture.
Absolutely
