If you don’t know how to get out of jury duty, idk how you ever made EP
I’m pretty sure those making $15-25 an hour have a better argument for hardship than you do. Everyone is busy. The fact that you make significantly more money than anyone else on the panel does not mean you’re more deserving of being excused. You probably won’t get selected anyways so relax. If you do get selected to serve, I’m confident someone as smart as you can find a way to financially recover from this.
Don’t bother with the hardship excuses unless you actually have one. However, given that you are an rquity partner in big law, you very likely have no life and only work all the time.
If you’re a litigator, perhaps you can allude to a conflict with one of the parties, perhaps a top secret legal matter that cannot be disclosed due to attorney client privilege
Alternatively, you can also tell the judge you have irritable bowel syndrome and can't hold you poop. Will also get you dismissed.
I lost a case a few years ago because an administrative judge said we aren't officers of the court.
I followed the link on the jury duty card I received and filled in my information including stating that I am an attorney. My status changed to "no action required" the next day, indicating I was excused, with no explanation. The status change seemed almost automatic, so I assumed they didn't want no damn lawyer.
So, call the number on the card or follow the link or other instruction you're given, mention you are a very passionate lawyer and you just might be in luck.
Typically that means that the case you were assigned to has settled/pled/been continued. It is illegal and unconstitutional for the clerk's office to exclude attorneys from the jury pool. You can only be excused by the judge.
First, is that what the firm's policy states on Jury Duty? Are you worried about getting behind? Read the policy and approach your managing partner. You will not get out of a federal subpoena because your an attorney in Big Law. If anything both sides will want you for many reasons. That US District Judge who comes from Big Law is not going to buy that argument trust me. Refresh your memory on the firm's policy surely they insist on civic duty?
In Ireland you are exempt from Jury duty if you are in acive military, member of police, firefighters, judges, elected officials, or those in justice administration, full time carer for a child, elderly or disabled person. Ive been called four times and each time I cant do it as im in the legal field. I would love to do it but obviously I cant. Its done as it could create bias or confict of interest. Cant believe tgis is allowed in the US.
