I hate my job. I work dozens of child sex assault cases and my team is understaffed. Turnover is insane, haven't been able to go more than two months without another attorney or paralegal resigning. Management doesn't care and just keeps foisting the work on the new people till they burn out too. I'm only here because I need the paternity leave when my newlywed wife and I have our first kid. If it weren't for that I would be searching for a new job right now. Just wanted to rant, sorry.

Just a rant on how absolutely stupid the bar is. The fact that I’ve been a well-regarded attorney for many years now but just because I moved states, I need to provide references for every random volunteer position I had going back to college, plus need 8 personal references who can’t overlap with employment references, all just to be authorized to keep practicing law at the exact same law firm I’ve been at for years, is absolutely insane. Happy Thursday everyone! I know that as a profession and especially during this unprecedented time we constantly experience and are bombarded with negativity. Including the negativity in our lives away from work, which we see every time we get on social media platforms, or watch the news etc... therefore I thought we could put some positivity out there today and share some positive experiences that have been a result of this wfh/quarantine/pandemic.

My first lead that came organically from my brand new firm site was for a huge amount of work my guess is 350 hours. It seemed like client was price shopping, I wanted the work so I low balled them and offered to do the work for $75 an hour. I think the fair rate would have been 100-150. I think I overshot it because right after I gave the quote I was ghosted.

Is anyone experiencing a reduction of billables due to the partners assigning you less and doing more of the work themselves? If so, what year are you?

Legal discovery question for California: can we serve a plaintiff in a related case by depo notice or do we have to subpoena? We are defense counsel for case A. Case A and B were deemed related by the court. Cases have not been consolidated yet. There are 5 related cases. The Court ruled that depositions are to be global—meaning all counsel from the other cases can ask questions to the deponent. We want to depose Plaintiff in case B.

“Take a vacation it’ll help calm you down.” All it did was make me re-evaluate everything I’m doing. Which is nice but not very calming.

So I got 2 offers, 1 at a well-known firm (that I previously worked at, not as an atty) that offered 80K plus full benefits (100% health coverage, PTO, sick days, discretionary bonus & 1800 billable req.) Their a little old school in their methods but I do see the younger gen. coming in to make changes. 2nd offer is at a newer firm however i’ve heard great things, and they offered 80k, unl. PTO, 1500 billable hours, bonus incentives qrtrly, & 50% health ins. WHY can’t I make a decision? HELP
