I haven’t but I know a sitting federal district judge who has served on two civil trial juries. Makes one wonder what the rest of the panel looked like and how dangerous the folks who were stuck actually were. Also know a number of lawyers who ended up on juries.
They love to get 1 lawyer (preferably transactional) on to help explain the jury instructions. I was a foreman once on a minor criminal trial- it was actually really interesting.
My selection process was three days with no computers or phones and the trial would have been a week if I was selected
Just tell them you believe in jury nullification (Google it) and it should get you off every time.
I’ve never been a on a jury but I’m a lawyer and my mom is a judge and my dad is a cop so I think the odds of being selected are very low.
I've had an attorney on one of my juries. Was hoping they would pick him as the foreperson. Instead they picked the drive thru girl at Burger King.
After the trial he told me he thought it would be a good experience for her 🤷♂️
Just ask the lawyer closest to your age if they went to law school with you, you’re out
Not encouraging y’all... not encouraging ...
I have, on a criminal trial. I was really shocked that they picked me.
I was on a jury that needed to determine the financial settlement someone got after a vehicular accident (injured but did not die). No arguments. No pizza. So boring. I almost fell asleep.
I was on a jury for a criminal trial, along with another lawyer as well!
I cannot imagine a single decent reason why you’d ever let a lawyer onto your pane. Literally, not one.
I had an attorney on my jury last week. He was an alternate, which I was bummed about. I knew the plaintiff couldn’t meet their burden of proof and that a lawyer would be able to see right through it and find in my favor. Jury did the right thing in the end but I had no reservations about an attorney deciding my case.
If chosen, be like uncle Mitch: ignore the facts and vote to acquit.
Yes! I sat on a jury for two weeks on a homicide case. Couldn’t believe they sat me but they did then I realized why. I was the foreman and quickly realized the defendant was not guilty because it was self defense. The defense attorney made the smart decision of seating a lawyer who would understand the nuances of criminal law. One of the alternate jurors was an attorney as well.
If you’re able to serve, you should. It’s a great experience. If you have to get out, the most surefire way is to personally know a party.
If you have something encouraging to add to balance that out, I would appreciate it.
I was on a jury for a criminal trial. There was an administrative judge on my jury as well.
Criminal trial
I did - myself and a former litigator we’re stuck on the jury. I would work remotely during lunch breaks and after jury duty ended each day.
Same. A 35 hour jury week and a 50 hour billable week
Heard of one or two attorneys who’ve been picked but it’s definitely a rare exception in most cases. You have a special duty of candor to the court. As an officer of the court you must do your duty as required. It’s a relief not trying to think of something to get you on, just be honest. Hope you get picked!
Gee thanks!!! Lmao
My reason for being excused from jury selection in Los Angeles, CA was that I had trial at the time I was summoned to appear. In LA, Jury summons are sent a few weeks before a juror must appear, so the reasoning is valid.
I got off because I had just been to the 50th anniversary party of the corporate defendant!
Yes and I became the foreman. We convicted for malicious destruction of property. It left me flabbergasted that someone paid for THAT defense
