You will always have a leg up with prior clerkship experience. You could ask your judge to refer you or just apply to district judges in your district.
If you can emphasize local ties or a desire to continue practicing there, with the mag clerkship as evidence of that, it could help. But the competitive districts are always going to be the hardest so your judge’s connections will be a big boost if he/she will put in a good word for you. Definitely do what you can to do awesome work for your judge bc that will just make them more likely to recommend your app. And perhaps talk to your judge about your application process when you can just to keep them in the loop, let them know how it’s going, and say that you’re prioritizing apps to district judges in the area. When you’re ready to submit (or after u submitted), then let them know and ask if they’d be willing to put in a good word to the DJ to improve your chances at an interview.
