I flew Icelandair from JFK to Reykjavik, and then Atlantic Airways from Reykjavik to the Faroe Islands, and vice versa on the way back, with a planned stop over in Iceland on the way back, which I took advantage of to see the country.
I was very worried after reading all of the negative reviews about Icelandair, I almost cancelled my flight. I'm SO glad I didn't! It was such a smooth process — just don't expect the same level of efficiency, luxury, or infrastructure as a major US Airline or one of the overseas long-haul five-star carriers. The staff were so lovely and helpful. The flight overall was great, we got free complimentary cold drinks throughout both flights and it was great to see Iceland before flying to New York! I would 100% recommend this airline, the flights were on time and check-in was smooth. I would definitely fly with them again!

Two very different airlines. One is a LCC with essentially 2 medium haul segments, the other is a full service airline, part of a global alliance, where you’ll have at least one long haul segment to/from JFK.
Pro
Iceland, Finnair is part of oneworld, and has actual business class, PE etc. although FI does have a decent lounge in KEF.
FinnAir fire , Icelandic air not so much
