I agree. The Private Bank sounds great, looks great, but with WF’s concept, it is set up to benefit the firm. It is extremely hard for an FA accustomed to leading prospects and clients.
You’ll never get a referral from the private bank. All referrals are TO them, nothing ever comes out. Any cross selling with an FA is done when an opportunity is found in a branch. There are some private bank/FA teams, but they are established. New FA coming in, wanting to partner. Not a chance.
All FAs are part of the wealth management group (WFA/TPB). Larger producers are “Private Bank FAs” which is purely a title. You are no different than the FA in a branch, other than title and office location. Your proposed position is not allowed to receive any referrals sourced from branches. So your only option is to partner with a private banker, investment strategist, and fiduciary advisory specialist. This then dwindles comp down to 25% each. If a deal is above $5mm, then you have to add a wealth advisor which further dwindles your comp. Assuming Your on board with that, ask yourself why would the private bank team bring in an FA? We aren’t needed in this scenario. Generally the assets on these deals are done through the investment strategist, meaning not much need for an FA. That’s when the comp fighting starts.
If you do jump, I only wish you luck. I’ve been in the wealth management group 10 years - never seen it work the way an FA expects. Always a fight.
You’re only being recruited to add your multi-million $ households to the private bank pot. When that happens, you’ll be at WF forever.
Depends very much on your area and the quality of your pri ate bank team, but generally speaking the referral opportunities are significant.
If you’re plan is to partner with the private bank and receive any benefit back, you’ll be sorry.
You can’t even begin to understand the comp struggles when you “partner” w/ TPB.
Hmmm. I might be confused about some terms. I’m not exactly sure what you mean by “partner with the private bank”. We’d be in the private bank. So do you mean partnering with the other areas/units in the private bank (like lending or mortgage)?
Thank you for the replies. We’re in a pretty wealthy but underserved area and there’s only 1 Private Bank FA team currently and my understanding is that other areas of the bank don’t really care for or refer to them. I think we have a great opportunity to establish ourselves and make the connections they haven’t.
