I think you can break 90 without a driver depending on your approach and short game but like every one else on here mentioning you will most likely plateau there.
Driver is the hardest club to hit so take your time! Once you start hitting fairways and only have 100 to the green, it’s a different game
Yeah probably spot on. The good news is I’ve been forced to improve my iron striking so once driver is decent scoring should be a lot easier
By driving iron do you mean like a 2-3 iron? Likely it’ll be hard to hit for a high handicap.
Driving long and straight is statistically the most important part if golf, so working on driver/3wood would be key.
Define low? And at what distance?
Dialing in driver is mostly just practice, at least in my case it was. It’s helpful to be long off the tee at longer distances. Even as a high hcp, it was helpful to shoot lower and flirt with breaking 90.
I still don’t really use my 3-wood much and am considering swapping it out for a hybrid.
You’re on. I’ll reach out when I’m in the area, hopefully. Can’t wait to watch you bomb the big dog 290 down the fairway
Maybe look into a 5 wood or a hybrid? I am comfortable with my driver, but I relied heavily on my 5 wood when I wasn’t and it is still my go-to for narrow fairway and short par 4s. It’s more intuitive than a 3 wood off the tee, especially if you are used to a long iron. I would try that before I tried a driving iron.
A 5 wood could be good off the tee, I’ll look into that
Unlikely to get that low without driver or at least 3 wood. Take two lessons and you’ll enjoy golf way more if you can’t hit a driver. It’s a completely different swing. Those lessons will drop you at least 5 strokes and make it a more fun game
Used to have a wicked slice. Took 2-3 lessons to fix and scores quickly dropped.
Whatever you need to get to the green in 2 on a par 4 and 5. Try a forgiving hybrid iron. Should be able to pipe a 3 at least 220. If you can hit it off the deck you’ll be good to hit that twice to a par 5 green and putt for Eagle.
True that. I have a 4h I’m iffy with so maybe I’ll start there. I can hit that ~210 or a bit mire. It bugs me because the driver goes 250-270 when it works but the slice is brutal
