I always saw myself as a lifer in this industry but the pandemic changed priorities for me. I might stick around for another year or two, but I’m looking for something more creatively fulfilling that feels like I’m actually making a difference in the world, and ads ain’t it
Interesting to see alot of fishes in the bowl seem to agree with your point of view on this one 💫
Chief
I left a holding company agency for an independent agency and the difference is night and day. The holding companies are just SO dysfunctional and poorly run.
I was interviewing at the tech companies but now I think I may hang around the agency world a little longer.
Wonderful insight ! Agree whole heartedly, there is way more value in the people because of this
I’m currently interviewing for an in house position at a non profit. Personally, I’d love to be able to take my skill set and actually make a difference. The grass isn’t always greener but I’m sick of getting stressed about CPG products I don’t even eat.
Wishing you all the best! Hope the outcome is successful 💫 Also recently had a team member leave for a non profit.
I’ve been working in agencies for a decade now and just accepted an offer for an in-house position which offers competitive salary and amazing yearly bonuses & 401K. WLB is way better too from some people I talked to. It’s very clear to me how agencies don’t invest in their people and rely too heavily on “doing fun work” to retain their talents. To me, that’s far from enough. Someday in my old days, I don’t want to regret not taking my PTO days, not going on my dream vacation, and not spending time with my family. It’s all about shifting perspective and it’s a more fulfilling one looking through this lens.
Amazing and congrats 👏💫🥂
You'll see 3 types of people in agencies
1. Their in it to climb the agency ladder.
2. Their early in their career and need it to go brand side.
3. They put up with the stress because they get to do work that isn't boring.
I think it’s much simpler… there are 2 types of people in this industry:
1. Those who are there for a career
2. Those who are just collecting a paycheck.
There’s no denying a lot of people moving around. When Covid first arrived and after agencies and marketing were hit hard. They did mass layoffs. That started everything. People being locked down in metropolitan areas feeling disconnected from family and constantly assessing they’re quality of life within the same four walls of a small apartment they don’t own, no job and no idea when one would come back. Many are still figuring out their next move. Tentatively.
If ever there were an opportunity for new people to get into marketing and advertising it’s now. Unfortunately for them and for the industry at large, it’s going to be harder to groom new talent in the current environment.
It's time agencies to seriously rethink their "people pillar" will be interesting to see the response agencies have on the 'great talent migration'.
Please excuse the unnecessary 'to' 🥴
I did 1 year client side and hated being tied to one brand and watching the creative agency have all the fun. Been back in agencies ever since, but I worked my ass of for a lot of years so that now I can do it now on my terms. I work reduced hours, I take my paid vacation days, I try to maintain boundaries when I’m off. Can’t complain (even though I still do on occasion.)
@OP, what kind of roles are there on the consulting side for Brand/Account people? 👀
How about strategy?
I’ve worked in and around advertising agencies for almost 25 years and people leave a lot for other careers. I think people get burnt out, laid off or just want something different. I’ve seen a lot of women leave to become full time moms too.
Yep, I have seen it too over the years (not as much as you mine is 15yrs), it definitely feels different this time like a shift in the agency model is needed. I'm excited to watch this space!
