I’m a Clinical Documentation Specialist! Completely remote, and they even gave me my own set up ( I’m with a big Texas hospital system). Most CDI specialists come from nursing so they train you on the coding side. The clinical knowledge and critical thinking is what you bring to the table! There’s an organization called ACDIS that accredits Clinical Documentation Specialists and that’s how I did my research and prep! 😊
Hello,
Congrats on the apprenticeship! CDS come from different backgrounds not just nursing. Another route would be to get a bachelors or masters in health information or have a medical billing and coding associate degree/certification. The organization on that side of the spectrum is called AHIMA.
So there’s no need to have a nursing degree! Especially with your experience and understanding of the ICD-10 billing, you should do well! I think it just takes a lot of good foundation (which you will get in the apprenticeship) and loads of practice. Make sure to ask lots of questions so you can achieve the best learning experience. Best of luck to you!

Their nurses are 100% remote. It's a telephone triage line that handles most of the major insurance companies, and about 200 other companies and health systems. They're selective, so be sure to have a great resume highlighting all of your experience, and a cover letter.
Once you change your physical address as required by state board of nursing, you would lose compact status. State rules vary but usually you have a set period of time to report, also what it takes to maintain residency in US varies quite a bit as well.
Most don’t allow it for both security concerns, mess of ensuring you have a work visa in that country, appropriate taxes are withheld, and fear of liability (in some places they can be held to the employment standard of the country in which you are located (holidays, PTO, paid leave, etc).
