Anyone live in Torrence. Spouse and I found a home we love but I just discovered it’s 2 miles from the Torrance Refinery. After reading articles concerned about health and incident safety. Does anyone live there? Any insights on this? Do the winds help manage risk?

Lived in Torrance for 20 years - haven’t had any major issues 🤷🏾‍♀️

yet.

The winds will help mitigate it a bit. I assume the house is west of the refineries. I grew up in Torrance and it provided a great place to grow up, that was a long time ago so I can’t be certain what it is like today.
What are the closest major cross-streets near the home you are considering?

Ah, so it is near El Camino College. From an environmental standpoint I have to say I think you are right to be somewhat wary; between the refinery and the freeways nearby there is a lot of stuff in the air in that area. I wouldn’t shy completely away from Torrance though. There are some nice neighborhoods in the town and it provides good access to everything you will want.

Many places you might think of living in LA are within 2 miles of a facility with potential process safety exposure and/or potential chronic air quality considerations. Fortunately, we also have one of the strictest and most effective local regulators (South Coast Air Quality Management District) which has done an excellent job improving overall and localized air quality over the past several decades. 2 miles is a relatively long way when thinking about potential health risks from a refinery.

For incident safety, you’re almost certainly out of immediate danger from an incident, but could be in range of an evacuation order related to a large fire or other catastrophic process safety event. Like I said, this is kind of a risk you take living most places in SoCal and really hasn’t materialized often (especially compared to the Gulf Coast).

Two miles is typically outside the range of most significant pollutants of concern for chronic exposure. You may experience some slight uptick in things like ozone, etc., but you’d avoid most exposure to particulate matter which is probably the most detrimental from a lung cancer/asthma point of view.

Living requires risk, it just does. Optimizing the risks you take is important, but I wouldn’t let a 2 mile proximity to the Torrance Refinery deter you.

Grew up in the area you’re looking at, north Torrance near Gardena.

Frankly, the refinery hasn’t had an effect on my community and no one I know blames the refinery for any respiratory or health issues. I drive by and sometimes see the refinery flaring (the big bright fire) which is really the only time that has real pollutants in the air, and I think people who live immediately around it should probably close their windows. Even if there’s a major incident, like a fire, close the windows. My HS cross country team would run everyday by the refinery and when there was bad air days, the community is notified and we just would not go run, but still go about our daily Lives.

All that to say, don’t need to factor in the refinery when thinking about living near there. Great area - underrated food community :)

After 6 years of temporary contracts and unstable situations, I find my dream job in my dream company. All of a sudden the world goes upside down and I get laid off. I start sending hundreds of applications, with only 2 recruiters getting back to me to say I don’t have experience for the job (this is how it works in Italy). Add a terrible health situation in my family and it seems there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Ugh. 😞

Anyone looking at traveling to Costa Rica? They have a list of states from which they will admit tourists while also requiring a negative covid test, health history, etc. As someone not on the approved list, I am bitter and curious why the population is grouped at a state level when there are massively different rates of infection within each state (not to mention personal responsibility) and you are already required to present a negative test. Any idea how often those lists get updated?
