Anyone really dislike their state court clerkship? My experience hasn’t been great, the calendar is always so busy and I feel like I’m constantly under pressure to finish an overwhelming amount of work. I’ve talked to clerks in my court from similar departments and they feel the same. I feel like it’s too stressful and doesn’t allow me time to do deep research or enjoy my work. It’s more of an assembly line to churn out work.

What level of court? I know state trial courts are generally underfunded and understaffed, but my understanding was that intermediate appellate courts and state supreme courts weren’t too bad

Superior court often refers to trial court level, so I’m assuming that’s the case in your state. I’ve always heard to avoid these types of clerkships. My advice is to just buckle down and not make waves until you get an exit opportunity. If you’re already over a year into this role, start interviewing to get away. Be careful raising complaints to management, because (1) there’s likely nothing they can do and (2) you don’t want to get a reputation with the judges or staff that follows you somewhere. Sorry this is happening

Is it the smart move to take a pay cut and clerk for a judge?

Little context: I was an ED student, full time paralegal/clerk throughout my law school experience, and a single mother. I did not take advantage of the law school extracurriculars and missed out on clerk application deadlines my final year (2020). Would it benefit me to take a pay cut as a transactional clerk by about $20k to work as a clerk for a year then re-enter firm life? I’m transactional and enjoy that line of work.

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.

Ive been practicing in TX for 2-3 years at a big law firm doing mostly bankruptcy work (and some trial) and looking to clerk at a bankruptcy court in SDNY/DDE/EDVA (I am well aware of how great the SDTX judges are but I am set on leaving Texas). Anyone familiar with how many apps these judges normally get or what makes candidates stand out? Are these judges generally not interested in someone who has practiced in a different market?

Still WFH? What are other chambers doing for task management? Our chambers has been keeping up with assignments, incoming emails needing judge’s eyes, and written orders, all through Microsoft Planner. We share PDFs through Sharepoint folders. Although we still email draft orders back and forth, the system seems to work well enough. We still aren’t operating at our previous capacity because it takes 10x the number of steps to get a motion heard or an order entered—90% of our workload.

Need advice on a specific question!
Interviewed with Chicago court 2 weeks ago; they decide mid-August. Interviewed with DC judge last week; hear from him by this Friday. Chicago said if I need an answer before August, they'd try to make a decision about me sooner.
Should I ask Chicago for an answer? Or should I wait until there's an offer from DC judge? Maybe seems better to withdraw before an offer is made rather than ask for time to think about it/turn down DC? What's proper etiquette?
